Elna was founded in 1934 by Spanish immigrant, Dr. Ramon Casas Robert, in Geneva, Switzerland. The first Elna, Elna I, was very innovated. It had a free arm, housing for the feed dog and bobbin mechanism. The drop in bobbin created a quiet running sewing machine.
The Elna I was portable and folded up for easy storage, weighing in at a little over 15 lbs. It was painted green instead of the traditional japanned black, in order to stand out and grab sewers attention Gaining the nickname, The Grasshopper.
Elna's Supermatic, created in 1952, was the first automated reverse feed machine with interchangable cams.
Elna declared bankruptcy in 1995.
In August 2006, Janome Corporation acquired Elna.
Their high end sewing machines are still assembled in Switzerland and all sewing machines are Swiss Design.
We are proud to be part of the Janome family through Elna.
